KRALENDIJK — Anthony Nicolaas is at the top of the list with four points of the five competitions in the open chess championship on the island.There was fierce competition the past weekend and the current champion, the 10-year old Emanuel Lont, had a hard time of it. He only succeeded in bringing two matches to a tie, meaning several candidates have registered for the main title this year.
Emanuel Lont tied the hard won match against his instructor. Carlos Brunk, a newcomer, remained undefeated and won from Percy Prudencia. Anthony Nicolaas was declared the winner in the match against Dayant Oedjaghir. The match between Sander Rietveld and Rouel Domacassé was cancelled.
Instructor Serapio Pop defeated his pupil, last year’s youth champion, Rouel Domacassé, on Sunday. In an exciting match between Anthony Nicolaas and Emanuel Lont, a draw was offered by both parties several times, but these were rejected. Nicolaas finally got a decisive lead and won the match.
After the weekend Anthony Nicolaas is at the top of the list with 4 points out of five matches, followed by Carlos Brunk with 3.5 points out of four matches. Emanuel Lont is third with 2.5 points out of four matches; Sander Rietveld and Serapio Pop share the fourth place with 1.5 point out of three matches, followed by Michael Santaris and Rouel Domacassé with a shared fifth place with 1 point out of three matches. Percy Prudencia and Dayant Oedjaghir haven’t won any points so far.
The competitions will continue this weekend at 4 pm in the Aula of the SGB. The parties on Saturday are: Emanuel Lont versus Dayant Oedjaghir, Rouel Domacassé versus Anthony Nicolaas, Carlos Brunk versus Sander Rietveld, and Michael Santaris versus Percy Prudencia. Serapio Pop is off.
The following matches will be played on Sunday: Serapio Pop versus Carlos Brunk, Emanuel Lont versus Rouel Domacassé, Sander Rietveld versus Michael Santaris, and Dayant Oedjaghir versus Percy Prudencia. Anthony Nicolaas is off.
